Priors Field Primary School

Science

Our philosophy & culture

Our aim at Priors Field is to provide an outstanding science curriculum that is engaging, ambitious, and inclusive. We foster curiosity and a lifelong love for science among our children. Our science curriculum is designed to equip our learners with the knowledge and skills to confidently explore and understand the natural world. We believe in providing meaningful opportunities for practical learning and promoting scientific thinking, encouraging children to question, investigate, and analyse the world around them.

How children learn Science

Curriculum Design

Our science curriculum is designed in line with the National Curriculum for Science and reflects the statutory requirements and content for each Key Stage. We carefully plan and sequence our lessons to ensure a progressive and coherent learning journey for all. The curriculum includes a wide range of topics covering biological, physical, and chemical sciences, adapted appropriately to the age and abilities of our children.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In the early years, we provide a stimulating environment filled with opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and observation. Through play-based activities, children develop fundamental scientific skills, such as predicting, observing, and questioning. We introduce them to basic scientific concepts and encourage them to make connections with their immediate environment.

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

Building upon the EYFS, we introduce more structured scientific learning in Key Stage 1. We cover a wide range of topics including plants, animals, everyday materials, and seasonal changes. Our lessons incorporate a blend of direct instruction, practical investigations, and group discussions, enabling pupils to develop their investigative skills and scientific vocabulary.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6)

In Key Stage 2, our science curriculum becomes more knowledge-focused, with children learning about topics such as forces, electricity, evolution, and Earth and space. We provide opportunities for children to engage in scientific enquiry, developing their ability to ask questions, plan investigations, collect and analyse data, draw conclusions, and evaluate their findings. We encourage collaborative work, allowing children to share ideas and develop their teamwork and communication skills.

Practical Learning

We place great emphasis on practical learning experiences as they are highly effective in engaging learners and deepening their understanding of scientific concepts. Practical activities are embedded throughout our science curriculum, allowing children to develop scientific skills such as observing, predicting, measuring, and evaluating. We provide appropriate resources, equipment, and safety measures to facilitate hands-on experiments and investigations.

Cross-Curricular Links

We recognise the importance of making connections between science and other subjects in order to enrich the children's learning experiences. We actively seek opportunities to integrate science with mathematics, English, technology, and other relevant subjects. These cross-curricular links deepen understanding and help children see the relevance of science in their daily lives.

Enrichment and Real-World Contexts

To enrich the learning experiences we provide opportunities for science-related educational visits, workshops, and guest speakers. We are especially proud of our Bioblitz Day in the summer term. These experiences help our children understand how scientific knowledge is applied in real-world contexts. We also encourage engagement with current scientific news and discoveries, fostering curiosity and inspiring children to consider future careers in STEM fields.

Differentiation and Inclusion

We embrace the diverse learning needs of our pupils and ensure that our science curriculum is accessible to all. Learning is adapted to support and challenge learners appropriately, including the use of visual aids, practical demonstrations, manipulatives, and scaffolding techniques. We promote a growth mindset and encourage children to embrace challenges and take ownership of their learning.

The impact of the Science curriculum

Attainment and Progress

Through our science curriculum, children make excellent progress in acquiring scientific knowledge and developing their skills. Assessment tasks, including both formative and summative assessments, are carefully designed to measure children's understanding and identify areas for further development. Regular assessment data analysis allows us to evaluate impact and provide targeted support where needed.

Engagement and Enthusiasm

Our children demonstrate a high level of engagement and enthusiasm towards science. They actively participate in practical learning activities and discussions. Regular opportunities for 'pupil voice' ensure that their interests and questions are taken into account, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment in their scientific learning.

Scientific Thinking and Skills

Children develop strong scientific thinking skills, enabling them to analyse data, evaluate evidence, and draw meaningful conclusions. They demonstrate resilience, perseverance, and critical thinking when faced with scientific challenges. Our children apply their scientific knowledge beyond the classroom, demonstrating a deep scientific understanding and the ability to think critically about scientific claims.

Transferrable Skills

Our science curriculum equips our children with transferrable skills that go beyond science. The ability to question, investigate, make informed decisions, and communicate findings effectively are applicable across various subjects and contexts. These skills prepare the children for future academic success and lifelong learning.

Inclusion and Equal Opportunities

We ensure that our science curriculum promotes equality and inclusivity. Our teaching approach celebrates and values diversity, fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment for all children. We provide opportunities for all children to excel in science, building their confidence and self-esteem.

We strive to provide an outstanding science curriculum at Priors Field that ignites a passion for scientific discovery, equips our learners with essential knowledge and skills, and prepares them for the challenges of the future.
